Do's and don'ts debating Creationists??!!!
Don't do it - its pointless.
Do's and dont's debating evolutionists??!!!
Don't do it - its pointless.
Do's and dont's debating atheists??!!!
Don't do it - its pointless.
Everything that can be said has been said on these subjects - countless debates have been held on this site for years and not led anywhere very quickly. Why can't everyone just except that others may have different beliefs - live and let live.
a consumer activist site here in the u.k runs an on-line straw poll on a different subject each week.. this time the question was "what religion are you ?
the tick boxes listed all the common faiths, r.c, cof e, jewish etc, along with "other" and "non-practising".
out of 5,000 respondents 22% said non-practising.. 22% said atheist.. !3% said agnostic.. i think this may be a fair reflection of belief in the u.k today, 37% who do not believe in god, plus another 22% who are not convinced, hence non-practising.. after over 100 years of preaching the dubs are fighting a losing battle.. of course they were far too small a group to warrant their own tick-box on the survey.. .
Only 22% claim to be atheist - this is good news. The last survey of this type I read had atheism at 25% in the UK.
Interesting quote on Sky News the other day (related to the coverage of the Pope last week). A survey was conducted in the UK and the question was - Do you consider yourself "Spiritual"?
71% said yes.
Thats surveys for you - it depends who you ask and what questions that are used.
The UK definately has a fairly strong atheistic, agnostic under-current - but has this had a positive influence on this nation - hmm......
we last went to one in 2006 - it was the channel islands.
can't remember whether it was jersey or guernsey as they alternate, have been to both as we went to the channel islands in 2005 too.

Perth Scotland - October 2007.
Wow - its been that long......
i'm asking because i just watched "the road".
it may not be the saddest but it's up there.
"my sister's keeper" was a real tearjerker too..
Schindlers List - first movie to bring me to tears in the actual cinema.
I looked across the aisle and looked at another guy there - he was in tears as well.
resigned as an elder last week.
briefly this is my story.
i was raised as a witness in the 60s and 70s.
Lets think - welcome to the JWN board.
As you can imagine we can relate to your experience.
I too was an elder - resigned Oct 2007 due to the question box article in the Sept 2007 KM - look it up - you will understand. That was the final blow for me.
Original plan was to keep going to meetings - but I could'nt do it - once I could see/hear the hypocricy and lies the meetings became unbearable. My wife followed me out 6 months later - woo hoo!
But it is tricky - family ties and all that.
Anyway - all the best for the future - and keep your faith in God.

good news!.
the dutch kingdom ministry shows the following statement:.
this year (2010) 43.372 persons attended the memorial, 100 persons took of the symbols.. the 2009 attendance figure was 51.578.. this means that 8.206 went missing in one single year, a plunge of 16%.. i get the impression that the partakes figure is going up as they now avoid the term "annointed".. .
That is a massive drop if its accurate.
And I think the previous posts hit the nail on the head - freedom of information is going to hit the WTBTS very hard.
All we need now is a global drop of 16% - well we can hope!!!!!!
I am in the Glasgow area - quite a few of us here.
but i guess this is my first big rant.. this last year has been the hardest year of my life.
my son tried to kill himself ( he did something pretty bad, got caught, and i guess that's the only way he thought to deal) i am also very close to actually hating my husband, and i do not hate people.
and every decision that i make lately seems to be the wrong one.

Shed a wee tear reading that - you are in a very diffcult position.
Not to sure how much advice I can give but a few points would be -
1 - Try not focus on the past - it cannot be changed though it can hurt us very much.
2 - Try and focus on the future - this is unwritten - anything is possible.
3 - Clearly things need to change - perhaps a dramatic change is required.
4 - Your other half sounds like a deeply selfish person and is dragging you down to the point of stealing your happiness, perhaps it is time to leave!
Many on JWN have dealt with similar situations - but have lived to tell the happy ending. You need to decide not to accept the current situation and start making moves to alter things for the good. It cannot be allowed to continue as it is.
May God bless you with wisdom.

i am going to get a lot of flack for this post, but i need to do it.
i want to preface this by saying that i don't judge any of you and i believe in the right of freedom of speech and freedom of religion, including your freedom to not practice one.. however, i'm finding a trend among some ex jws here.
notice the word "some".
Brotherdan - best post I have read here in a long time - I am with you 100%.
And yeah - you have and will receive the same old responses that appear on here all the time. It has got to the stage that we can predict "who" will respond to such threads.
I would not get yourself overly concerned what others think or believe - its up to them.
Faith is not a possession of everyone....
